Double-Edged Sword of Advancement: AI’s Pros and Cons

By Red Garcia & Cristeta Kontorinis

AI is everywhere these days, isn’t it? From the way we work to how we interact with the world, it’s changing the game. Businesses are diving headfirst into this digital revolution, racing to take advantage of AI’s incredible potential. And let’s be real it’s pretty amazing. It can save time, simplify tasks, and uncover insights we’d never catch on our own.

But like anything else in life, it’s not perfect. For all its genius, AI comes with its quirks and challenges. So, as companies scramble to get ahead, there’s a big, burning question hanging in the air: is AI going to be your secret weapon or your Achilles’ heel?

Let’s break it down together. Because in a world where the stakes are higher than ever, survival depends on making the right moves.

Pros

Here are a handful of benefits that AI can bring to businesses of all sizes you can think of, whether it's an established business already or a startup run by aspiring entrepreneurs, the tools AI brings will without a doubt be of service one way or another.

  • Improved Efficiency: AI offers automation to streamline mundane tasks so that business owners can focus on growing their brand more as it saves both time and resources, who wouldn’t want that? A bunch of apps already have this feature such as Microsoft's Copilot which complements other apps used such as Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc. It's essentially having your own J.A.R.V.I.S in your workspace that you can order with a click.

  • Competitive Advantage: Being well versed in the various uses of AI would give businesses a higher chance of being ahead of the curb because it’s the new kid on the block that will be here until he’s old and frail, meaning everyone will be using in a few years time and it’ll be here to stay,. so why not get the upper hand while it isn’t saturated yet. Plus, isn’t business all about tapping into unsaturated markets and models for more profit?

  • Personalization for clients: Now this is the perfect pair for when businesses have websites that clients can order their products from simply due to the fact that it makes the relationship between product and customer easier. This feature analyzes certain aspects of the customer’s data on the website such as demographic, recent product searches and many other prompts. It then has the ability to craft a personalized algorithm for the customers to choose from that would be more in line with their preferences. This feature would ensure customer loyalty in the website due to the ever enhancing experience they would receive with each purchase. Do you ever wonder why Amazon seems to know what to suggest that their customers should buy next?

Cons

Hold on right there! Before we scurry to our nearest AI tool to make them do work for us, we have to realize that this new kid on the block has some pretty weird quirks,. meaning AI has some glaring imperfections that must not be overlooked when applied to businesses. Below are some of them to look out for.

  • Over-reliance on AI: Businesses may become too dependent on AI by making it some sort of a shortcut in doing work which makes it (us) lose human intuition and judgment. Remember, it’s only meant to be an assistant to us and not a boss that does all the work and calls all the shots, we still want flesh and bones to have control.

  • Resistance to Change: Employees may be against the implementation of AI in the workspace out of fear that they will no longer be needed. This brings up the importance of educating employees first to clear up any fears and doubts so staff morale won’t take a hit. Having events such as workshops or seminars about properly implementing AI in the work environment is also a good option to ease it in.

  • Ethical Concerns: Ah ethics, the one thing holding businesses back from success (this is a joke for legal reasons). But anyways, it is a legitimate concern that people have towards AI since it has the capacity to infringe on their rights which is not entirely wrong. They worry for their privacy due to the fear of surveillance and manipulation that comes with its use.
